🔥 Phase 3 Preparation Status

Black Temple is scheduled to launch globally on August 27, 2026. Complete the pre-raid attunement chains across Serpentshrine Cavern, The Eye, and Mount Hyjal early. Account-wide attunement ensures once one character unlocks Karabor, all your alts are raid-ready.

1

Overview & Entrance Location

The Black Temple, formerly the Temple of Karabor, is a 25-player raid in eastern Shadowmoon Valley, Outland. In The Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, Phase 3 and Black Temple launch globally on August 27, 2026 at 3:00 PM PDT / 23:00 BST. The raid contains 9 boss encounters and ends with Illidan Stormrage.

📍 Finding the Entrance

Unlike standard dungeons, the entrance is not at the main front gate. The raid entrance is in eastern Shadowmoon Valley at approximately /way 71, 46, at the back entrance to the Karabor Sewers. Use this location for the Black Temple instance entrance rather than the imposing main exterior gate.

This guide is focused primarily on TBC Classic Anniversary. Retail solo and Warglaive transmog information is kept in a separate section so the Classic raid requirements and loot rules stay clear.

Black Temple guide 2026 Attunement Quest Chain

On TBC Classic Anniversary, Black Temple entry requires the attunement questline. The attunement prerequisites include level 70, choosing either the Aldor or Scryers, access to The Arcatraz, and the required progression through Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep, and Hyjal Summit. The Anniversary Edition also makes raid attunements account-wide after you complete them once, although quest progress itself is not shared between characters.

⚠️ Important: Attunement Is Required

Black Temple launches with Phase 3 on August 27, 2026. You can complete a large portion of the preparation before launch, but the raid-entry progression must be completed before you can enter Black Temple. Because Anniversary attunements are account-wide, you only need to complete the raid attunement process once for your account.

Stage Key Requirement What You Must Do
1 Start the Ashtongue quest chain Start the Tablets of Baa'ri questline from Anchorite Ceyla (Aldor) or Arcanist Thelis (Scryers) in Shadowmoon Valley.
2 The Arcatraz Complete the required Arcatraz portion of the chain, then continue the questline toward Akama and the Ashtongue Deathsworn.
3 Serpentshrine Cavern Defeat Fathom-Lord Karathress so the required quest progression can continue.
4 Tempest Keep Complete Ruse of the Ashtongue by defeating Al'ar in Tempest Keep: The Eye.
5 Hyjal Summit attunement Complete The Vials of Eternity, which requires the Vials of Eternity from Lady Vashj and Kael'thas Sunstrider.
6 Rage Winterchill Defeat Rage Winterchill in Hyjal Summit and loot the Time-Phased Phylactery for An Artifact From the Past.
7 Final quest chain Turn in the linking quests to A'dal in Shattrath, then continue to Xi'ri outside Black Temple.
8 Medallion of Karabor Complete A Distraction for Akama from Xi'ri. This final step rewards the Medallion of Karabor and unlocks Black Temple entry.

⚡ Short on Time for Attunement?

The attunement crosses multiple raids and can require coordinated raid groups. If you need help completing the required progression before Phase 3, CoachCarry can help you prepare your character for Black Temple.

Complete Tactics for All 9 Black Temple Bosses

1. High Warlord Naj'entus

Encounter 1 / 9
Summary
  • Keep your raid spread out widely across the water pool to minimize splash damage from Needle Spine.
  • Free impaled allies immediately by clicking their Impaling Spine to extract and loot the Naj'entus Spine item.
  • The player carrying the spine must target the boss and throw it to shatter his Tidal Shield.
  • Critical: Wait until all healers top the entire raid back to full health before breaking Tidal Shield, as bursting it triggers heavy frost damage across the entire room.
Notes: Creating an item use macro (/use Naj'entus Spine) significantly speeds up breaking the shield. Hunters should apply Aimed Shot and Rogues keep Wound Poison active to suppress self-healing while Tidal Shield is up.

2. Supremus

Encounter 2 / 9
Phase 1 (60 Seconds)
  • Stationary tank-and-spank phase lasting exactly 60 seconds.
  • Instantly step away from the traveling blue trails of Molten Flame when Supremus casts Molten Punch.
  • Tanks must stack closely and healers stay alert for massive incoming spikes from Hateful Strike.
Phase 2 (60 Seconds)
  • Kiting phase lasting 60 seconds with no normal aggro table.
  • Any player targeted by Fixate must immediately kite along the outer courtyard perimeter.
  • Constantly watch your positioning to avoid erupting Volcanic Geyser fireballs.
  • Aggro resets completely when transitioning back to Phase 1.
Notes: Hunters must cast Misdirection onto the Main Tank as soon as Phase 2 ends to safely re-establish boss threat.

3. Shade of Akama

Encounter 3 / 9
Phase 1: Add Control Wave
  • DPS priority: Focus down and kill all Ashtongue Channelers and Sorcerers surrounding the Shade as fast as possible.
  • Assign 1 Tank to pick up Ashtongue Defenders and Off-Tanks to gather Rogues, Spiritbinders, and Elementalists arriving from both side doorways.
  • Hunters and Mages place Frost Trap and cast Frost Nova to assist tanks in kiting adds while DPS focus the central channelers.
  • Phase 2 begins the moment all Channelers fall and Shade of Akama reaches Akama.
Phase 2: 60-Second Execute Burn
  • The raid has a strict 1-minute window to burn down the Shade before Akama is killed.
  • Trigger Bloodlust / Heroism and unload all offensive cooldowns.
Notes: Doorway adds (Spiritbinders, Rogues, Elementalists) are susceptible to full Crowd Control (Stuns, Roots, Traps) if your tanks require breathing room.

4. Teron Gorefiend

Encounter 4 / 9
Summary
  • Every 30 seconds, Teron places Shadow of Death on a random raid member.
  • When your debuff reaches 20 seconds remaining, run immediately to the back wall far away from your allies.
  • Upon expiration, you transform into a Vengeful Spirit and must eliminate the 4 spawned Shadowy Constructs before they reach the raid.
  • Utilize your unique Ghost ability kit in order:
    • • Cast Spirit Chains (Button 3) instantly to AoE snare all 4 constructs.
    • • Spam Spirit Volley (Button 4) for continuous AoE damage.
    • • Fire Spirit Lance (Button 1) to single-target burst any construct breaking through.
  • Healers must cleanse the burning DoT from Incinerate and keep the raid stabilized against Shadow Bolt volleys.
Notes: Paladins maintain Shadow Resistance Aura and Priests buff Shadow Protection for reliable passive mitigation. Classes with immunities can completely nullify Shadow of Death if activated before the cast finishes: Paladins (Divine Shield), Rogues (Cloak of Shadows), Mages (Ice Block), and Hunters (Feign Death).

5. Gurtogg Bloodboil

Encounter 5 / 9
Phase 1: Soak Rotation (60 Seconds)
  • Lasts for 60 seconds.
  • Organize a strict group rotation to soak Bloodboil, which always hits the 5 furthest players from the boss.
  • Tanks must taunt-swap immediately after Gurtogg lands Bewildering Strike.
Phase 2: Fel Rage (30 Seconds)
  • Starts after Gurtogg finishes his 5th Bloodboil cast and lasts 30 seconds.
  • Gurtogg and a random raid member both receive Fel Rage.
  • The selected player acts as the tank for 30s with zero normal threat generation, and must turn Gurtogg away from the group to protect everyone from Fel-Acid Breath.
  • Ranged players must position at least 18 yards away to prevent taking damage from Fel Geyser.
Notes: Mages (Ice Block) and Paladins (Divine Shield) can instantly wipe their accumulated Bloodboil debuff stacks. If picked for Fel Rage, immediately pop all available defensive cooldowns, healthstones, and armor potions to assist healers.

6. Reliquary of Souls

Encounter 6 / 9
Phase 1: Essence of Suffering
  • The raid is placed under Aura of Suffering (0% healing received).
  • Tanks must swap aggro frequently and rotate mitigation cooldowns to survive.
  • Healers must cleanse Soul Drain without delay.
Phase 2: Essence of Desire
  • The raid is placed under Aura of Desire (reflects 50% damage back to attackers).
  • Monitor incoming damage carefully if targeted by Deaden (+100% damage taken).
  • Establish an uninterrupted kick rotation on Spirit Shock.
  • Shatter Rune Shield instantly so your interrupts can connect.
Phase 3: Essence of Anger
  • The raid is placed under Aura of Anger (ramping Shadow DoT).
  • Hold your burst if you gain Seethe (+200% threat generated).
  • Keep the boss faced away from the group to protect against Soul Scream.
  • Healers must rapidly stabilize allies afflicted by Spite.
Notes: Priests cast Power Word: Shield and Paladins cast Blessing of Sacrifice to shield tanks during Phase 1. Warlocks maintain Curse of Tongues during Phase 2 to slow down Spirit Shock casts. Warriors can use Spell Reflection on Deaden during Phase 2 to reflect the +100% damage taken debuff back onto the boss! Killing the floating Enslaved Souls during intermissions restores health and mana to all players within 10 yards.

7. Mother Shahraz

Encounter 7 / 9
Summary
  • Requires exactly 3 Tanks stacked together to evenly split incoming physical damage from Saber Lash.
  • When linked by Fatal Attraction, the 3 affected players must immediately run 25 yards away from one another in opposite directions to snap the beam.
  • Casters and healers must maintain at least 18 yards distance from the boss to prevent spell-locking from Interrupting Shriek.
  • Shahraz periodically casts 4 elemental beams every 30 seconds: Sinful Beam, Sinister Beam, Vile Beam, and Wicked Beam.
Notes: Paladins must run Shadow Resistance Aura and Priests cast Shadow Protection for baseline shadow mitigation. All non-tank raid members are required to equip 250 to 300 unbuffed Shadow Resistance gear (reaching the 365 buffed cap) to survive passive beam and link damage.

8. The Illidari Council

Encounter 8 / 9
Summary
  • All four bosses share a unified, single health pool.
  • Assign a Mage to tank High Nethermancer Zerevor at max range and repeatedly cast Spellsteal on Dampen Magic.
  • Raid members must remain spread out to avoid overlapping damage from Flamestrike and Blizzard.
  • Off-Tanks hold Lady Malande and Veras Darkshadow separated from the main pack.
  • Healers spot-heal any player targeted by Envenom when Veras emerges from Vanish.
  • Set up a strict interrupt rotation on Lady Malande's Circle of Healing. Assign 2 physical kicks and 2 spell kicks to counter Gathios' Blessing of Protection and Blessing of Spell Warding.
  • The Main Tank holds Gathios the Shatterer (primary DPS target) and pulls him out of Consecration immediately.
Notes: Hunters should use Misdirection to assist tanks with cleanly separating all 4 bosses on the pull. Warlocks cast Curse of Tongues on Lady Malande to make interrupting Circle of Healing effortless. A Warrior tank can use Spell Reflection against Gathios' Judgement of Blood and Judgement of Command.

9. Illidan Stormrage (Final Boss)

Final Encounter
Phase 1: Night Elf Form (100% to 65%)
  • Tank Illidan facing away from the raid to prevent Draw Soul from hitting the team.
  • Tanks must maintain Shield Block or Holy Shield constantly before Shear finishes casting.
  • Sidestep the blue fire patches created by Flame Crash.
  • Run out of the group immediately if targeted by Parasitic Shadowfiend so ranged DPS can burst them down.
Phase 2: Flames of Azzinoth (65% Health)
  • Illidan flies up and throws his Warglaives into the grate, spawning two Flames of Azzinoth.
  • 2 Fire Resistance Tanks pick up the elementals and face them away due to Flame Blast.
  • Tanks must keep the elementals positioned near the warglaives; dragging them too far triggers Uncaged Wrath (+wipe!).
  • Dodge blue fire from Blaze and avoid Fireball impacts.
  • Healers spot-heal any player struck by Dark Barrage.
Phase 3: Ground Phase Re-entry
  • Begins once both Flames of Azzinoth die and lasts for ~50 seconds before transitioning into Demon Form.
  • Features all Phase 1 abilities plus Agonizing Flames.
  • Keep the raid spread at least 5 yards apart to minimize Agonizing Flames splash.
Phase 4: Demon Form (60 Seconds)
  • Illidan morphs into Demon Form for 60 seconds.
  • A Warlock Tank with Shadow Resistance picks up Illidan with Searing Pain at range.
  • Melee DPS must stay completely out to avoid being killed by Aura of Dread.
  • All players stay at least 20 yards away from the Warlock tank due to Shadow Blast splash damage.
  • Spread out to prevent multi-hits from Flame Burst.
  • Stun and burst down spawned Shadow Demons immediately before they reach their fixated targets.
Phase 5: Maiev & Execute (30% to 0%)
  • Begins at 30% health. Illidan gains Frenzy (+100% attack speed).
  • Phase 5 continues to alternate with Phase 4 Demon Form until dead.
  • Tanks must pop defensive cooldowns (Shield Wall / Last Stand) when Frenzy triggers.
  • Maiev Shadowsong joins the fight and places Cage Traps on the ground.
  • Kite Illidan directly into a Cage Trap to stun him for 15 seconds and inflict +100% increased damage taken during your burn!
Notes: Assign 2 Fire Resistance Tanks with 365 Fire Resistance cap for Phase 2 Flames of Azzinoth. Assign 1 Warlock Tank with 365 Shadow Resistance cap for Demon Form in Phase 4. Ensure Illidan remains faced away from the raid at all times in human form to avoid lethal Draw Soul wipes.

BLACK TEMPLE FACTION

Ashtongue Deathsworn Reputation

Ashtongue Deathsworn is the faction directly tied to Black Temple. The faction becomes part of your journey during the attunement chain, and completing the attunement brings you to Friendly reputation.

How You Gain Reputation

Complete the Black Temple attunement quests, then earn additional reputation by completing the remaining quests and defeating enemies inside Black Temple.

Why It Matters

Higher reputation unlocks Black Temple-related crafting recipes, including Shadow Resistance recipes, while Exalted unlocks class-specific epic trinkets from Quartermaster Okuno.

⚔️ Practical Reputation Route

For most players, the efficient route is to finish the attunement first, then build reputation through Black Temple quests and raid clears. Current TBC guides report roughly 15–25 reputation from trash and about 200–250 from bosses, with a full clear providing roughly 7,700 reputation before modifiers.

5

Featured Loot & Tier 6 Tokens

Black Temple contains Tier 6 tokens for the Chest, Legs, and Shoulders slots, plus weapons, trinkets, rings, cloaks, and other epic rewards. Illidan Stormrage is the source of both Warglaives of Azzinoth. Use the CoachCarry filter below to search the featured loot by item, boss, or class. The table highlights the most important Black Temple rewards; it is not intended to replace a full boss-by-boss loot database.

Solo & Transmog Farming in 2026

In modern Retail World of Warcraft, Black Temple is an old legacy raid and can generally be soloed by appropriately leveled characters. This is completely separate from TBC Classic Anniversary, where Black Temple is a level-70 25-player progression raid launching in Phase 3.

💡 Demon Hunter Warglaive Transmog Note

To unlock the Warglaives of Azzinoth appearances for a Demon Hunter in modern Retail WoW, first obtain both Warglaives of Azzinoth from Illidan Stormrage and equip both blades on one character to earn the Warglaives of Azzinoth Feat of Strength. Then defeat Illidan during Black Temple Timewalking to earn I'll Hold These For You Until You Get Out. This unlocks the Warglaives appearances for Demon Hunter transmog. This Retail transmog system is separate from the original TBC Classic item use.
